Almost a year has passed since my time in Ecuador working with The Tandana Foundation. What a remarkable experience – I traveled almost 3,000 miles away from my home in Boston to Quito and yet felt at home every minute of my stay, thanks to The Tandana Foundation and my host community. The community was so welcoming and gracious; they even made us feel welcome by integrating us into their Carnival celebration, an important religious observance time before Lent. This was a once-in-a-lifetime experience that I’ll never forget. The Carnival festivities, which included hiking up a hill/mountain to eat and pray, followed by a lot of fun (dumping water on each other and spraying silly string and foam), crossed language barriers and allowed anyone with a jovial attitude to participate. Tandana was there every step of the way to bridge these relationships with the community, and for that I’m truly grateful. I’ll never forget the people of the community, and I also made great friends the week that I volunteered, who I still talk to today, because this special experience is a great bond to share. I’m so happy to see Tandana celebrating 10 years and I hope that it sees many more, so that the eyes of us Westerners can continue to be opened and the communities continue to be served. Service is a two-way experience and The Tandana Foundation is responsible for closing the gap between our cultures to foster cultural understanding and form cross-cultural friendships. It certainly succeeds in meeting these goals.

Hace casi un año, desde mi experiencia en Ecuador trabajando con la Fundación Tandana. Que experiencia tan notable. Viajé casi 3,000 millas desde mi casa en Boston hasta Quito y aún así, me sentí en casa durante cada minuto de min estadía, gracias a Fundación Tandana y la comunidad que me acogió. La comunidad fur muy acogedora y agardecida, inclusive me hicieron sentir bienvenidos, al integrarnos en su celebración de Carnaval, el cual es una importante celebración religiosa antes de la “Cuaresma”. Esta fue una oportunidad única en la vida, la cual nunca olvidaré. El festival de Carnaval, que incluye escalar una montaña para comer y orar, seguida por mucha diversión (mojándose con agua unos a otros y rociando unas divertidas tiras de espuma), atravesar las barreras de lenguaje y permitió a cualquier persona con actitud jovial, a participar. Tandana estuvo presente en cada momento del camino, para asistir en las relaciones con la comunidad y por eso, estoy completamente agradecido. Jamás olvidaré a la gente de la comunidad, además hice muy buenos amigos, la semana que realicé mi voluntariado, con los cuales sigo en comunicación hasta ahora. Porque esta experiencia es muy especial, es muy grata compartir. Estoy muy felíz, de ver a Tandana, celebrar sus 10 años y espero que sean muchos más, para que los ojos de nosotros los occidentales puedan seguir siendo abiertos y las comunidades continúen siendo atendidas. El servicio es una experiencia en ambas direcciones y la Fundación Tandana es responsable por cerrar el vacío que existe entre nuestras culturas, promoviendo entendimiento cultural y formando amistades multi-culturales. Ciertamente, cumple sus metas con éxito.

Il y a maintenant presqu’un an que je me suis rendue en Équateur avec la Fondation Tandana. Ce fut pour moi une expérience incroyable de partir à 5 000 kilomètres de Boston où j’habite, et de me sentir pourtant à la maison tout au long de mon séjour à Quito grâce à la remarquable équipe de Tandana et à la communauté qui nous a accueillis. Cette dernière, si aimable et hospitalière, nous a mis à l’aise en nous faisant participer à l’importante manifestation religieuse que représente leur carnaval. Ce fut une expérience unique que jamais je n’oublierai. Les festivités – durant lesquelles nous avons notamment partagé un repas et prié au sommet d’une colline avant de nous amuser à nous asperger d’eau et de mousse – nous ont permis de nous affranchir des barrières linguistiques et de faire participer tous ceux qui ont bien voulu se prêter au jeu. Les responsables de Tandana étaient en permanence à nos côtés pour faciliter nos échanges avec la communauté, et je leur en suis très reconnaissante. Je n’oublierai jamais les membres de la communauté, ni les amis que je me suis faits durant la semaine que j’ai passée en tant que bénévole et avec qui je suis toujours en contact, car cette expérience crée des liens très forts. Je suis ravie que Tandana fête ses dix ans d’existence, et j’espère que la fondation continuera encore longtemps à ouvrir les yeux des occidentaux et à servir les différentes communautés. Apporter son aide est une expérience réciproque et Tandana se donne pour mission de rapprocher les cultures, de favoriser l’entente interculturelle et de développer des liens d’amitié entre les peuples, ce à quoi elle parvient admirablement.

Allow me to post my comments on this subject. I will be leaving shortly for my third HCVV and look forward to the experience, and the unknowns. I started going “to get out of the comfort zone” and my wishes were met, and then some. It’s a great experience and helps one find places in their heart perhaps we didn’t know existed, or were dormant. I thanked our bus driver last year for driving so safely telling him “our lives are in your hands”, to which he responded thru an interpreter “no, our lives are in your hands”. The Tandana Foundation strives to anticipate the needs of the volunteers, both medical and non medical and also works to assure the local people seeking medical care are treated with love, professionalism and dignity. A thank you to all of those who have helped in the past and continue to do so moving forward. And Congrats to the Taft Family and all staff members for 10 Years!
